ABSTRACT

Background The COVID-19 pandemic led to a prompt implementation of remote care, especially in mental health care. The evidence supporting this modality of care is still emerging, with few qualitative studies describing its implementation in Latin American countries. This study aims to understand the perspectives of therapists and patients regarding the use of telehealth in a child and adolescent mental health unit of a Chilean public service. Methods This is a qualitative study. Two focus groups were defined with 14 professionals, and 16 in-depth interviews were conducted with users of an outpatient child and adolescent psychiatry unit. The data were analyzed using the grounded theory model. Results In the group of therapists, four main categories emerged: background of mental telehealth, implementation, mental telehealth from the therapist's position, and projections. Three main categories emerged in the patient's group: implementation, evaluation of mental telehealth users, and projections. Conclusions There are elements in common between the opinions of patients and therapists. Something to note within the patient's group is that, despite accepting remote care and recognizing its positive aspects, aside from the pandemic context, they prefer face-to-face or mixed care.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: There is a diverse body of research that utilizes notions of the dynamical systems (DS) perspective to describe change processes in psychotherapy, understanding it as a non-linear self-organized system that presents emergent processes and structural variations. A systematic review of research in individual psychotherapy with adult patients addressed from this perspective has been carried out. The review was carried out supported by the PRISMA methodology tracking the main concepts of the DS perspective applied to individual psychotherapy of adults (between 1997 and 2019), in English and Spanish, using the electronic databases PsycINFO and ProQuest. The final selection included 34 studies, both case studies and naturalistic studies, covering different process and outcome variables of psychotherapy. The results highlight how such concepts help to understand patients' change as a nonlinear process, emphasizing its self-organizing characteristics, transitions from states that generate psychological distress to healthier states, and the formation of emergent patterns at different stages of psychotherapy. Some related aspects (e.g. role of the alliance, and of clinical interventions) that can be considered in the therapeutic work are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Genetic modification of living organisms has been a prosperous activity for research and development of agricultural, industrial and biomedical applications. Three decades have passed since the first genetically modified products, obtained by transgenesis, become available to the market. The regulatory frameworks across the world have not been able to keep up to date with new technologies, monitoring and safety concerns. New genome editing techniques are opening new avenues to genetic modification development and uses, putting pressure on these frameworks. Here we discuss the implications of definitions of living/genetically modified organisms, the evolving genome editing tools to obtain them and how the regulatory frameworks around the world have taken these technologies into account, with a focus on agricultural crops. Finally, we expand this review beyond commercial crops to address living modified organism uses in food industry, biomedical applications and climate change-oriented solutions.

ABSTRACT

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has generated an important health and economic impact on the world. Vaccines emerge as an intervention that can contribute to the control of the pandemic. Vaccines were approved for emergency use in the United States, Europe, as well as in Chile, however, they will not be immediately available, creating the need to prioritize vaccine distribution. The World Health Organization (WHO) and other international agencies established ethical frameworks to guide the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine globally. In Chile, the Advisory Council on Vaccines and Immunizations (CAVEI) and the COVID-19 Advisory Council of the Ministry of Health (MINSAL) recommended the groups to prioritize vaccination, based on the available evidence stating that this information could change over time. In this article, we propose a reference framework of ethical principles and values to support the decision-making of prioritization and distribution of vaccines in Chile. We propose three timeless values: maximizing benefits, prioritizing the most vulnerable, reciprocity, and two transversal bioethics principles: justice and transparency. This reference framework contributes to the vaccination plan communication, the decision-making by the authorities and supports the prioritization strategy's valúes framework. With an explicit values framework we can expect better communication or priorities, a greater acceptance of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination plan by the community and an increased vaccination coverage to protect the population.

ABSTRACT

The budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been considered for more than 20 years as a premier model organ- ism for biological sciences, also being the main microorganism used in wide industrial applications, like alcoholic fermentation in the winemaking process. Grape juice is a challenging environment for S. cerevisiae , with nitrogen deficiencies impairing fermentation rate and yeast biomass production, causing stuck or sluggish fermentations, thus generating sizeable economic losses for wine industry. In the present review, we summarize some recent efforts in the search of causative genes that account for yeast adaptation to low nitrogen environments, specially focused in wine fermentation conditions. We start presenting a brief perspective of yeast nitrogen utilization under wine fermentative conditions, highlighting yeast preference for some nitrogen sources above others. Then, we give an outlook of S. cerevisiae genetic diversity studies, paying special attention to efforts in genome sequencing for population structure determination and presenting QTL mapping as a powerful tool for phenotype-genotype correlations. Finally, we do a recapitulation of S. cerevisiae natural diversity related to low nitrogen adaptation, specially showing how different studies have left in evidence the central role of the TORC1 signalling pathway in nitrogen utilization and positioned wild S. cerevisiae strains as a reservoir of beneficial alleles with potential industrial applications (e.g. improvement of industrial yeasts for wine production). More studies focused in disentangling the genetic bases of S. cerevisiae adaptation in wine fermentation will be key to determine the domestication effects over low nitrogen adaptation, as well as to definitely proof that wild S. cerevisiae strains have potential genetic determinants for better adaptation to low nitrogen conditions.

ABSTRACT

The selection of nutrient bases depends on the microorganism and the purpose of the medium. Inhibitors of bacterial growth are of great importance in selective and differential media and may interfere in the growth of the microorganism of interest. An adequate balance between promoter substances and inhibitors of bacterial growth is thus required, especially for bacteria that could be found either at very low concentrations or those subject to different stress conditions during storage of the samples containing them, such as Salmonella. The aim was to evaluate the effect of a combination of nutrients of different origins and inhibitors of grampositive bacteria on the development of Salmonella serotypes. 52 Salmonella strains and a representation of other bacteria and yeasts were selected. The nutritional capacity of the composition was determined by spectrophotometric technique formulating variants with mixtures of nutritive bases, and recording the increase in biomass. Recovery capacity and inhibition of two experimental variants with different inhibitors were quantitatively tested. The productivity of the final formulation was compared with a chromogenic medium (Oxoid, England). Salmonella showed abundant growth in the variants made with different nutrient combinations. Both experimental formulations showed their ability to recover microorganisms of interest. The final composition showed productivity values higher than 0.80 in both variants. The mixture of nutrient bases and bile salts as an inhibitor of growth of grampositive bacteria was an effective combination, capable of stimulating the growth of Salmonella genus when these bacteria are found at low concentration.

ABSTRACT

Background Campylobacter jejuni is one of the main causal agents of food borne diseases. Infections with this pathogen are mainly caused by chicken meat consumption. Aim To characterize antibiotic resistance and virulence factors in C. jejuni strains obtained from chicken meat and poultry feces in Central Chile. Material and Methods The presence of C. jejuni in 30 meat and 40 feces samples from poultry was studied. From these samples, we obtained 40 strains which were characterized at the molecular level for the presence of 16 genes involved in virulence using PCR. In parallel, antibiotic resistance for ciprofloxacin, nalidixic acid, tetracycline, erythromycin, azithromycin, chloramphenicol y ampicillin was analyzed. Results Twenty and 63% of feces and chicken meat samples were positive for C. jejuni, respectively. Moreover, a high percentage of strains showed antibiotic resistance, where 27% of strains were resistant to all tested antibiotics, except for azithromycin. Finally, 10% of the strains coming from feces contained 14 out of 16 virulence genes evaluated. Only 23% of the strains did not contain any of these genes. Conclusions A high percentage of feces and chicken meat samples are contaminated with C. jejuni. Moreover, these strains show a high genetic and phenotypic diversity represented by their antibiotic resistance profiles and the presence of virulence factors.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This paper presents the Vocalization-Silence Dynamic Patterns (VSDP) method for the analysis of coordination in psychotherapeutic conversation. The objectives of its development are to empirically account for vocal coordination patterns in dialogs and to examine the association between interactional coordination and positive relational outcomes. The VSDP method makes it possible to demonstrate that vocal activity is a nonverbal phenomenon entwined with and which influences the linguistic code. The analyses which can be carried out through this method are illustrated with real acoustic signals taken from psychotherapy segments. The VSDP method is discussed, considering its usefulness for psychotherapeutic research as well as the study of dyadic conversation within other scenarios.

ABSTRACT

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) populations have a high prevalence of suicide behaviors. Aim: To review the literature on suicide among LGBT populations. Material and Methods: A systematic review of the scientific literature published between 2004 and 2014 on suicidality among LGBT people was conducted. Forty-five articles were selected for a thematic analysis. Results: The research on suicide among LGBT people has increased during the last decade. The vast majority of studies have been conducted in the U.S. and other English speaking countries. At the same time, in a great part, these studies have been published in journals specializing in mental health and public health of sexual minorities. In general, they provide a significant foundation on protective and risk factors for suicide as well as their epidemiology. Conclusions: The focus of research on suicide among LGBT populations is mainly exploratory. More attention on these at-risk groups is required from the suicide research community in order to provide useful evidence for prevention and development of focalized and effective interventions.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Salmonella are the most common causes of food-borne disease worldwide. Selenite cystine broth is a selective enrichment medium used for the recovery of Salmonella species in samples of food, water, feces and other materials of clinical importance. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the combination of nutrition bases obtained by original methods and sodium selenite to ensure appropriate recovery of Salmonella species in selenite cystine broth. METHODS: A comparative study was conducted with various nutrition bases to evaluate the fostering of bacterial growth in six strains of Salmonella and Shigella. Two variants were prepared and the microorganisms selected were inoculated at an approximate concentration of 3 × 108 colony-forming units per milliliter. Absorbance was measured with a 640 nanometer spectrophotometer every hour to determine biomass increase. Behavior of the selenite cystine broth medium formulated by ingredients was compared with that of Merck cystine selenite broth in the presence of the microorganisms of interest. Determination was performed of the productivity and selectivity of the culture medium. RESULTS: The variant containing the mixture of nutrient bases (bacteriological peptone Z, soybean peptone and casein enzymatic hydrolysate) facilitated better recovery of the strains tested, with significant differences (p< 0.05) with respect to the variant containing casein enzymatic hydrolysate alone. The experimental medium containing the mixture of nutrient bases and sodium selenite displayed Salmonella recovery at low concentrations in a manner similar to the reference medium and inhibited Escherichia coli more efficiently at low concentrations. At high concentrations neither medium was able to inhibit the growth of E. coli. Productivity was satisfactory in both media, ranging between 0.1 and 1, and so was selectivity, which reached an approximate value of 3. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of original nutrition bases and sodium selenite allowed appropriate recovery of Salmonella species.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Species of the genus Aeromonas are a current public health problem, for they are the etiological agents responsible for the growing incidence of diarrheal diseases requiring medical care. Conventional procedures for their diagnosis are very complicated, laborious and time-consuming. A new methodology based on the use of chromogenic culture media allows diagnostic simplification and acceleration, yielding highly specific results. OBJECTIVE: Study the effect of combining several selective agents for gram-positive microorganisms upon an increased capacity for recovery, quantification and differentiation of Aeromonas species. METHODS: Assessment was conducted of the inhibiting effect of combined selective agents (sodium deoxycholate (0.05-0.2 g·L-1), bile salts (0.65 g·L-1), brilliant green (0.025-0.03 g·L-1), crystal violet (0.001-0.01 g·L-1) and sodium sulfite (0.8 g·L-1)) on gram-positive microorganisms, as well as their capacity for recovery, quantification and differentiation of Aeromonas species. The base used was the CromoGen AGN formulation without sodium deoxycholate. RESULTS: Productivity values for the media CromoCen AE and CromoCen AGN based on inoculation of 1.5 × 102 CFU·mL-1 were 116.8 % and 23.9 % for A. hydrophila, 100.8 % and 3.95 % for A. caviae, 93.6 % and 28.8 % for A. bestiarium, 85.1 % and 66.12 % for A. culicicola, 116.7 % and 59.2 % for A. veronii, 86.56 % and 13.2 % for A. popoffi, 94.8 % and 11.25 % for A. trota, and 103.9 % and 2.8 0% for A. eucrinophila. The new chromogenic composition enabled differentiation of microorganisms based on their cultural characteristics: color, shape, surface, colony borders and environmental proteolysis. CONCLUSIONS: Combination of various selective agents for the inhibition of grampositive microorganisms led to an increased capacity for recovery, quantification and differentiation of Aeromonas species.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: reemergence of Grampositive bacteria infections and the rise of their pathogenicity require a quick and accurate microbiological diagnosis. BioCen has developed a chromogenic composition for isolation, culturing and rapid and presumptive differentiation of gram-positive microorganisms through specific chromogenic reactions in which the inhibition of gramnegative bacteria is partial or total. OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the effect of a combination of nutrient bases, selective inhibitors and chromogenic substrates to increase the selectivity and differential capacity to detect Enterococcus, Streptococcus and Staphylococcus species of clinical importance. METHODS: twenty one microbial strains from the American Type Culture Collection and 24 clinical isolates of Enterococcus, Streptococcus and Staphylococcus and of other gramnegative microorganisms were evaluated. Various combinations of nutrient bases, thallium acetate, nalidixic acid and chromogenic substrates were also assessed for the promotion, growth and differentiation of grampositive bacteria. The microbiological functionality was evaluated whereas the diagnostic quality parameters were determined. RESULTS: the combination of nutrient bases allowed the development of grampositive microorganisms in 24 hours and their differentiation through specific chromogenic reactions. The growth of gramnegative microorganisms was inhibited by the thallium acetate (0.014 g·L-1) and nalidixic acid (0,008 g·L-1) except for Proteus mirabilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa whose morphological characteristics do not interfere with differentiation of target microorganisms. Sensitivity, specificity and accuracy for diagnosis were 100 %. CONCLUSIONS: the combination of nutrient bases, selective inhibitors and chromogenic substrates allowed the development and differentiation of the evaluated microorganism species. The inoculation of target and non-target microorganisms in the chromogenic medium and the differentiation of those strains where a similar color of the colonies was detected by means of supplementary rapid tests provided the medium with high diagnostic sensitivity, specificity and accuracy.

ABSTRACT

The present text, includes discussions and reflections derived from several studies in which the participation of the actors that make up the current information society as constants of higher education in Mexico are described, analyzed, and madeevident, as well as the palliatives emanating from it, transmission of information and the current training processes, the challenge of building signs and symbols when the signals are no longer controlled by the traditional pedagogical device, which requires, in a changing context, that higher education is no longer a selfsufficient interior, making the production of subjectivity possible by the disciplinary and control classes, legitimized by means of old and new technologies.

ABSTRACT

Background: There is growing interest in the treatment and return-to-work of workers with labor related mental illnesses. Aim: To perform a systematic review of practices and interventions that improve return to work. Material and Methods: Systematic literature review. Thirty articles were selected for in- depth analysis. Results: Self efficacy perception, work motivation, a lower age and a better socioeconomic status were identified as worker-related return to work facilitators. Among work environment facilitators, good communication practices, supervisor support, a good assessment and modification of work load, adjustment of expectations, a good relationship between employers and employees and positive work experiences were identified. Treatment may improve return to work using a multidisciplinary approach, reducing stress and identifying psychosocial determinants of mental problems rather than symptoms and providing a timely health care. Conclusions: Return to work of workers with labor related mental illnesses requires a constant sharing of information between health care workers, employers and employees to identify common therapeutic objectives.
